Chapter 17

“Another,” I say with a harsh bite to the barkeep. His judging brows lift as he polishes a glass, cleaning it thoroughly as he side-eyes me.

My irritation rises as he finishes his task before pouring another shot of whiskey. It will numb the pain and quiet the mind. I need to get away from myself. I intended to avoid this place entirely today, but the more I try to forget what happened two weeks ago, the more it haunts me. Besides, I needed a refill. Later, I’ll visit the moonshiners so I can avoid this place entirely.

Looking around, I am the only paying patron in here. One old sloppy miner is passed out in a booth drooling. The dinginess paired with the stale smell of spilled liquor reminds me of how pathetic this place and I are, made worse by the mid-morning light. I dismiss it and throw back my third shot. It will keep me warm and focused.
