Malignant Tumor in the Small Bowel Mesentery

A malignant tumor (often a liposarcoma) in the small bowel mesentery is resected by making a circular incision in the peritoneal leaf around the tumor mass, exposing the superior mesenteric vessels at the base of the mesentery, and dissecting, ligating, and dividing branches and tributaries to and from the area of involved mesentery. The length of small bowel to be resected is more limited than for a primary small bowel tumor. Caution is exercised to ensure pulsatile blood flow at the two ends of small bowel before they are anastomosed.
