Understanding feelings involves interpreting feelings, identifying cause and effect, and predicting how they will change.

You can see how both of these skills involve “thinking about feelings” as well as feeling them. Emotional literacy is a bridge between our emotions and our analysis. If the bridge is strong, we can do a great job interpreting feelings – if it’s weak, we’re probably coming to inept conclusions.

Some experts say emotional literacy also includes appropriately expressing feelings1 – a skill Six Seconds puts into the competence of “Navigate Emotions.” Emotional expression is a higher-level activity, a management task, so it’s part of Choose Yourself. Still, it’s a natural outgrowth of the first two, so often when I talk to parents and children about Emotional Literacy I include that component (just as children need to learn to use the right words to express a thought, they need to learn to appropriately express feelings).
