Successful rural households

In spite of being exploited by nobles, kings, and the Mexica Empire, the households at Capilco and Cuexcomate managed to achieve a high quality of life. The contents of the middens behind each house signaled their prosperity. Although I had learned much from this project, the results opened up many questions. Were these the only well-off commoners in the Aztec provinces, or was prosperity more widespread? Was the slight decline in the quality of life under the Mexica Empire caused by local problems in the Buenavista hills (such as overpopulation), or was it caused by exploitation by the empire? To answer these and other questions, I needed information from household excavations at other sites. At the time (1990), no one else was doing this work, so Cindy and I packed up our gear and our girls and moved to Yautepec for a new round of excavations. The new setting differed from the Buenavista hills in two important ways: the Yautepec Valley had some of the richest farmland in central Mexico, and Aztec Yautepec was a city, not a village or town. But, against my expectations, I would find that the commoner households of Yautepec were remarkably similar to those at Capilco and Cuexcomate.
