Chapter 13
“Lady Love,” Tad called out softly as soon as his feet touched down in the library.
No answer.
He turned and jumped clear out of his skin. She was standing right next to him.
“I am here,” she said, smiling that smile of hers.
He squirmed in his shiny, black boots. “Is it possible...?”
“Possible I have made a mistake, or the globe has made a mistake, or that the wind carried the wrong names?” Her smile widened and her eyes sparkled at him. “No, it is not.”
“But…he’s a werebeast.” Tad waited for astonishment to manifest.
The Lady kept smiling. “I am aware.”
The trinkets whispering on the shelf next to Tad quieted. Nothing but Sev shuffling his feathers was heard.
“What am I to do about it?” Tad asked.
“Have you consulted the library?”
Tad knew she knew he had not. “I thought this case was one you might like to handle personally, considering the complications.”
“You are capable.”
Probably she was much too busy to assist him. Tad mulled over his predicament.
“First, you must believe,” Lady Love said. “That is the starting point.”
Believe what? That Hameus was a beast? That Nila was a warrior woman sent to annihilate him? This morning he would have cried nonsense, but at the present moment he believed it very much. “And then what?”
Lady Love held out her hand to the mound of scrolls on a shelf a few feet away. “That would be a good place to begin your search.”
“Thank you,” Tad said, though he wanted to sigh and moan. There were at least fifty large tubes sitting there looking useless. Maybe he didn’t need this job after all? No, those thoughts were only because he was tired and hungry. Roselle needed him to be strong.
The Lady’s eyes twinkled at him and then she was gone.
“Well, you heard her,” Tad said to the birds. “Get busy finding a cure for Hameus and I will see if I can find something in here I can use to trap him.” It was supposed to be Hameus building the trap, not him. And he and Nila should have already been engaged, too. How had things gotten so off plan, and so quickly?
“Might you at least lay the scrolls out for us?” Sev asked.
Tad’s shoulders sagged. Why had the Lady given him pigeons instead of real helpers? But he pulled out half of the scrolls and unrolled them on the floor. “You can read, though?” he thought to ask just as he had completed the task.
“We are not imbeciles,” Sev said.
Tad looked down at the writing. He could not comprehend more than two or three words on the scroll nearest him. “Have the two of you been around awhile?” he asked the birds hopping around on the parchment.
“Yes, awhile,” Nan said. “You are wondering how we can read this ancient text?”
“I did wonder that,” Tad admitted, though he would never say he was impressed.
The she-bird rolled out her scroll with her beak. “Magic, dear. You have yours and we have ours.”
Did that mean he was stuck with
