“Tanner, I met someone.” Sharon observed her brother playing video games like his life depended on it. Sharing her engagement with their parents had brought some cold congratulations. But it was time to get her siblings on board.

Even though Tanner was her adopted brother, and two years younger, after the parents had married and their families got blended, it was rough for him at first. The other two kids stuck to each other as siblings, leaving Sharon out of their clique. But then, they soon realized that to get anything out of their dad, they needed their mom’s consent and, to get her consent, they’d have to pass through Sharon.

And that became their source of bonding. Little by little, she and Tanner, Hunter and Lucy became inseparable. They figured out each other’s preferences and learned to stay out of one another’s way when they were not in the mood for company or conversation.

Even though their love for each other grew, Tanner clearly wasn’t interested in divulging everything about him, and he had more issues. Since they moved from Detroit to Maryland, it had been quite a transition for her siblings.

So Sharon made every attempt to ensure they were comfortable. She introduced them at school as her siblings, and those who knew she was an only child soon got the update that her mom had remarried and along with the marriage, came her new siblings.

Sharon wasn’t one to discuss her family outside of their inner circle so she wasn’t really bothered by what people thought about their blended family. Some family friends liked it while others didn’t. So she gauged people’s reactions before introducing her siblings.

Soon enough, when the new school year started and new students joined the school, they had little to worry about and stopped bothering to explain why their last names were different even though there were siblings. Plenty of other children in the school had different last names but shared one parent.

What she wondered about, though, was Tanner and Hunter’s obsession with the Boys and Girls Club in the North-East area. She’d been warned by her mom when she was much younger to avoid the South-East area due to the gun violence and gang activity and possible drug use there. And she did.

But Tanner had insisted on joining the Boys and Girls Club almost as soon as they’d arrived in Maryland. He grew close to the people there, and very soon, he was rarely at home. He preferred to spend his evenings and most weekends at the club, and as far as she could tell, he wasn’t doing anything illegal so their parents didn’t object. Although sometimes she wished Tanner stayed home and spent time with them, she was somewhat grateful to know he found a place where he felt comfortable. And even though she never liked it, here she was about to benefit from his activity there.

His fingers paused on the controls, and he swung his square jaw in her direction, his short hair swaying. “You’ve never told me when you met someone before.
