In Bethlehem, a Bleak Christmas

The Intifadah broke out a few weeks after I had moved from Jerusalem back to Boston in late 1987. I was disappointed, as the old saying goes, that “they started the revolution without me.” But the Globe sent me back to the Middle East on temporary duty to help cover the upheaval, and I spent months operating out of my favorite hotel in the world, the American Colony in Palestinian East Jerusalem. To depict the scene on the West Bank, I believed a piece on Christmas in Bethlehem represented a perfect metaphor.
