Symptoms of heart trouble: Excluding obvious symptoms, such as angina and heart attack, other common signs of coronary heart disease include:

Aspirin and Heart Attack

Taking aspirin at the first sign of a heart attack may increase your chances of surviving it. A large study of 17,000 men and women—randomly given either 162 mg of aspirin or a placebo daily over a 30-day period within 24 hours of the onset of suspected heart attack symptoms—looked at this issue. The study ended after five weeks and showed a decrease in complications only in people taking aspirin. Experts estimate that aspirin taken at the beginning of a heart attack could save between 5,000 and 10,000 lives annually. There is evidence that an aspirin can reduce the risk of a heart attack even if the person has not yet developed cardiovascular disease. However, aspirin is not safe for everyone and can increase the risk of stroke for some. Discuss whether aspirin is a safe alternative with your health care provider.
