SIZE PAINTING

Most stains and distempers used water as the vehicle and a size as the binder which together formed the medium. Size was generally derived from animal sources. Of the trades that used this medium the Stainers of London had claim to the longest pedigree as a formally constituted guild – but others had for long used this group of media. The following pages will therefore include sections on the work of Stainers: their Hangings, Transparencies and Scene Painting, together with the work of the Plaisterers.
