S-L STUDIOS, 1922, AND GROSSMONT STUDIO CAST, 1925. In 1922, producer Arthur Sawyer approached Ed Fletcher about building a movie studio at Grossmont. Sawyer’s S-L Studios were constructed west of the lotus pond. Unfortunately, other than the studio building, the company’s operations did not progress. Fletcher and other local investors took control and reorganized it into Grossmont Studios in 1925. Grossmont built several new sets, including a large Egyptian scene that many locals later recalled. Although still images exist, including this one from a film called Beloved Bandit, the studio’s work, as with many silent-era movies, has disappeared. The company shut down operations by 1928, and the studio building was leased out as a roller rink and nightclub until destroyed in a 1934 fire.
