1846: Rifle and Light Infantry officers in full dress, by Ackerman. One of the European units on each establishment was formally designated as Light Infantry, as were a number of sepoy units. Although the Bengal Army’s three Gurkha battalions were dressed as Rifles from the outset they were not titled as such until after the Mutiny. The officer on the left therefore probably belongs to one of the Rifle companies formed within some regiments.

No irregular cavalry units were raised in Madras, but in 1826 five regiments forming the Hyderabad Contingent Cavalry were taken under Company control, under the command of British officers. All five had green alkalaks lined with white. The British officers assigned to them wore green hussar jackets and light cavalry helmets.
