Casualties, 1914 to 1923

The toll of human suffering endured by the Armenian people from 1914 to 1923 remains a subject of contentious debate and solemn reflection. While precise figures elude consensus, the weight of historical evidence suggests a staggering loss of life. Western scholars, in general alignment, assert that over a million Armenians may have perished during what is commonly referred to as the Armenian genocide and its aftermath.

In recent years, scholarly discourse has gravitated toward figures ranging from 1.2 million to 1.5 million casualties, painting a grim portrait of the magnitude of the tragedy. Yet, in the statistical argument, an additional set assessment emerges—simply stated as "over a million," as posited by Turkish historian Fikret Adanir. However, this estimate does not fully encapsulate the horrors endured beyond the years 1917 to 1918, leaving a depressing veil shrouding the true extent of the Armenian people's suffering.
