Chapter 7
He was staring at me when I woke up. I was so startled that I screamed. The loud noise was enough to make him run out of his sleeping structure. I did not know how long I had slept but I was no longer tired and my head was finally clear.
I sat up and pushed the petal blanket off of me. He had been crouched in the corner next to the leaf door. Had he watched me sleep all night?
It was unnerving to know that he had been so close to me when my guard was down.
I did not immediately leave the structure. It was nice to enjoy the only privacy I had had since leaving Earth.
It felt good.
I then instantly felt terrible for enjoying the space from my sisters. Would Mae be happy if she was in this situation right now?
I knew the answer was yes.
I left the room when my stomach reminded me that it was time to eat. The heavenly nectar was enough to make me face the male again. I crawled over the petals and poked my head past the leaf. I was not the only one who had been thinking about food. This time though, he was not slurping the nectar up through his long tongue. He brought the bowl to his lips and was trying to drink it the way I had. He was so focused on the task that he did not see me watching. I was barely able to stifle my laugh from how unsuccessful his attempt was. I did not want him to know I was observing him. Most of the thick liquid escape his mouth and ran down his tan chin onto his chest plates. He clicked many times, probably asking himself why he was even doing it. At least, that is what I was wondering. He stared down out the bowl in his top hands and beat his lower fists against his thighs in frustration. He tried again and only managed to dump more onto himself.
It was a very enduring thing to watch and it made me feel funny things. He set the bowl down on top of the other empty ones and then stared down at his messy front. The male opened his mouth and pushed his tongue out until it was long enough to start slurping up the nectar covering his plates. The action softened his whole appearance and as I watched him, I realized that I was no longer afraid of him. Maybe my head was not as clear as I thought.
I did not want to scare him away again, but I desperately wanted to drink more of the heavenly substance. On a whim, I clicked my tongue trying to mimic the noises he made. He froze, his tongue still extended toward his chest. It slowly retracted back inside of his mouth as he clasped all four hands together. They looked huge, all clasped in one ball like that. I ever so slowly crawled out past the leaf and rose to my feet.
