Manipulating data

Manipulation is often used in a negative context, but it does not always have to be negative, for example, clothing designers manipulate fabric or origami is the manipulation of paper. The key is to not over-manipulate or torture the data in order to get the results you want. You should make sure to have very clear research questions, hypotheses and data strategies prior to starting your data analyses.

One relatively minor way to manipulate the data is to recode the missing values for the variables of interest.

Here, we will set all missing values codes to missing so that the statistical program will ignore them from now on. Alternatives would be to set the -8 or inapplicable to zero in order to keep sample members not in paid work in the analyses.
