Language

1.Main points:

■Language extinction can occur as a result of a variety of different factors. The most common cause is that of colonialism. European powers took control over numerous countries in Africa and South America during the colonization era and imposed their languages on these Native American and native African societies. Many of these societies had well-developed languages but did not have established alphabets; thus, the obliteration of their languages was relatively easy. Other causes of language extinction include diseases that wipe out entire populations and acculturation, which is when one culture dominates another culture and the dominating culture’s language prevails.

■Language provides many insights and helpful clues for understanding both historic cultures and historic migration patterns. When a language becomes extinct, the world essentially loses the means to learn about an entire culture and whatever that culture had to offer the world. It also means the loss of important clues for understanding historic migration patterns.

■Today, in parts of Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, Celtic is being brought back from near-extinction. Hebrew was revived after World War II when Israel became an independent state, and Native Americans from Alaska to the tip of South America have begun to reestablish their distinct and unique linguistic heritage. The revival of these languages provides these cultures with a means to reestablish a very important aspect of their cultural identities.
