“Madam, I speak the truth,” I said. “Antony is married to Octavia.”

Cleopatra drew a knife; I do not know whether she intended to stab me or herself, for one of her handmaidens snatched the knife away. Cleopatra shook her head, scattering tears that gleamed as they fell.

“Then let Egypt sink into the Nile!” she moaned. “Let the sky fall and crush the Earth!”

Egypt did not sink, nor did the sky fall, but one terrible happening led to another.

Before Antony and Octavia were halfway to Egypt, Caesar broke the treaty with Pompeius, defeated him in battle, seized the African provinces and had Lepidus put to death. Antony knew that war was coming, and sent Octavia back to Rome, being too honourable a man to keep her as a hostage.
