laudamus … benedicimus … adoramus … glorificamus – all present tense indicative; note poetical assonance

gratias agimus tibi – ‘we give thanks to you’ (see Chapter 2)

Domine – vocative, addressing God

caelestis – genitive singular of adjective caelestis, ‘heavenly’

miserere – imperative of misereo, miserere; nobis – dative plural, so: ‘have mercy on us’

sedes – second person present tense of sedeo, sedere (English ‘sedentary’)

ad – preposition + accusative of dextera, dexterae (English ‘dextrous’)

tu solus Sanctus etc. – understand est

altissimus – superlative of altus

cum + ablative = ‘with’

Sancto – ablative of second declension Sanctus; Spiritu ablative of fourth declension Spiritus

Amen – from the Hebrew word meaning ‘so be it’
