Jaz paced back and forth in the ICU waiting room, trying her best not to explode. “You saw the hole in her side! Does that look like someone’s playing games?”

She turned to the sheriff, who simply stared back at her.

“I can’t believe this!” With dramatic flair, she threw herself onto the nearest sofa.

“Jazmin, sweetheart.” Sharon rose from her husband’s side and joined her. “In order to find Will, we have to know what really happened.”

“I told you what really happened. How many times do I have to tell you what really—”

“Okay, I understand, that’s what you thought you saw. But it was getting dark and there were plenty of shadows and—”

“Right, a shadow did that to Heather. A shadow smashed in your car window.”

Thomas got her attention across the room. He looked pretty drained. “About the car,” he said. “Where do you think it is now?”

“I don’t know. Ask him.”

“Will?”

“Will’s still out there! The guy, ask the guy!”

The sheriff replied, “The guy who…?”

“The guy who found the deer. The guy who drove us here. The guy who left with the car!”

The sheriff nodded. “What was his name again?”

“I told you, I don’t know!”

“He didn’t tell you?”

“I don’t know, maybe, I can’t remember.”

The sheriff gave a disapproving frown.

“I had a few other things on my mind, alright?”

“Can you describe what he looked like, what he was wearing?”

“He was all Goth-like. Wore these really cool leather boots. I saw them in something like an Urban Outfitters catalogue. I was going to get me a pair, but they’re way too expensive—least that’s what Uncle Charlie says. Probably ’cause they’re high quality, like suede, maybe calfskin— something you have to keep oiled all the time.”

She looked to their faces. Blank expressions all around.

“Any idea of his age?” the sheriff asked. “His height?”

She erupted. “We’ve got to go back out there! If we’re going to find Will, we’ve got to—”

Thomas broke in. “You’re not even sure what road you were on.”

“I told you! It was gravel! Up in the mountains!” Remembering another detail, she added, “Where they have their meetings.”

“Meetings?” the sheriff asked.

“Yeah, Heather and that guy, they have like these ceremonies where they call on the devil and stuff.”

“Heather’s part of that group?”

Jaz nodded. “And the guy, he’s their leader.”

“Jason?” the sheriff asked. “Is his name Jason?”

“Yeah, sure, why not. Tats on his arms—a snake on one, a cross on the other.”

“He had tattoos?”

“Yes.”

“On both arms?”

“Yes.”

“A snake and a cross?”

“Yes! Yes!” She was back on her feet. What’s with these people? She’s the one who’s supposed to be deaf!

“Did he ever talk about a fellow named Kristof?” the sheriff asked.

Jaz blew the hair out of her eyes. “I’m talking about the creepy monster thing, not your serial killer.”

“Maybe he was dressed up like one,” Thomas offered.

“Who?”

“Kristof.”

“Like what?”

“Your creepy monster thing.”

She was really ready to blow.

“No, I’m serious.” He was trying to be nice, but it made her feel like some stupid kid. “A big black suit, a scary mask. Who wouldn’t mistake him for—”

“Bovine feces!”

“What?

She didn’t bother repeating herself.
