The downside was a considerably smaller bonus and having to give up his international career, which had been a major incentive and a source of personal and professional enrichment since leaving his university.

Reiner finally joined Kölner Bank in February 2007 as process director, with a team of three people focused on digitization of reports to reduce paper use in branches. Max wanted to relaunch this position, giving it more strategic content and decision-making authority. Processes became a unit in its own right, tasked with carrying out projects aimed at transforming sales processes and improving efficiency, with less focus on pure process development, though it still kept its old name.

Reiner’s first task was to identify new improvement projects for the bank and reinforce his unit’s team. After a first few months in which the unit tackled a variety of projects, the two main projects (paperless office and multichannel marketing) were aborted by Handelsbank because they impacted directly on the systems plan and, according to the group resources director, “This is not the right time”. The unit was left with no strategic content and only “minor” improvement projects. Reiner’s morale sank. From being the head of a unit that was destined to be a catalyst of change in Kölner Bank, he had been reduced to “chief firefighter”, dealing with emergencies in short-term (three- to four-week) projects that were of no great strategic importance to the bank. By the end of 2007, his unit consisted of four people with a portfolio of three administrative projects.
