Chapter 12
Joanna
I gagged, stomach sore from all the vomiting I’d done in the past week, arms clinging to the cool porcelain of the toilet. Even the smell of my own sick made me want to puke again. That didn’t seem fair. I pushed myself away, flushing the toilet and dragging myself up to the sink, scooping handfuls of water into my mouth to wash away the bitter taste of bile and then splashing more over my clammy face.
Days of rest only confirmed how tired I was and I’d yet to make it through a day without something setting my stomach off. I was starting to wonder if Callum wasn’t right about there being something left of Illness’s influence in Canderfey. The Ancient’s blood had landed on my skin, had it infected me somehow? If that were true though, Callum should have been right at my side and twice as sick as I was. He’d been gory with the stuff.
Thankfully neither of my covenmates were home to hover around me and my only company down the stairs to the kitchen was Molly, our orange tabby. I set the kettle to brewing and dug mint tea out of the cupboard.
My contraceptive tea I took every morning was sitting on the counter, cold from when Aiden must have brewed it for me before leaving. The whistle of the kettle began to hiss, muted beneath the warning tone ringing in the back of my mind. I lifted the cup to my lips in my shaking hands as my eyes slid away from the kettle. The calendar was on the wall, just out of the corner of my eye and my blank stare strayed to it, tracking the weeks gone by.
The cages spread out over Canderfey nearly two months ago and my last period had been…not long after. I was late. Understanding sank in slowly, and embarrassment not long after. There was no Enmarian magic in Canderfey which meant that there was no charm working on my contraceptive tea which meant I was…
Late. Late or—
“Oh stars,” I whispered as the kettle screamed and my stomach dove to the floor. I stared at the cup in my hand, thoughts spinning. It was a stressful two months with who knew what influence from Illness playing on my body. Even simple exhaustion might make me late. The herbs in the tea were meant to promote health, but the charm was the guarantee against pregnancy.
I tossed the tea down the drain, wondering if I was wrong, what if the charm worked differently? Except the evidence of my body seemed to argue the proof. I made myself a new cup of mint tea with trembling hands.
What if I was pregnant? There would need to be a doctor and what doctor in their right mind would come here? Now? I needed to tell…
Oh gods, Aiden. I was both terrified and thrilled at the thought of telling Aiden. I took the brewing tea over to the table and sat myself down in
