STATUE OF THUTMOSE III, KARNAK

This representation of the great military king, Thutmose III, is one of the finest statues to have survived from ancient Egypt. The king conducted at least 17 campaigns and greatly expanded the Egyptian empire, installing sympathetic local rulers over captured territories. In addition, he built more than 50 temples in Egypt and remodelled much of the centre of Karnak temple.

We do not fully understand the relationship between Thutmose III and Hatshepsut. It has been suggested that Thutmose looked after military matters (in Nubia, for example) and Hatshepsut those of domestic affairs and trade – her support for an expedition to the land of Punt (probably northern Somalia and the surrounding area) is well-represented on her memorial temple walls – but we cannot be certain.

It is known that Thutmose III subsequently attempted to erase the name of Hatshepsut entirely, perhaps some 20 or so years after her death, but the reasons for this are just as unclear. It seems, if our understanding of the timing is correct, a long time to hold a grudge that he did not act on earlier.
