Chapter 9

Conall stood facing Ainslee. The wind came over the mountain in a gust, blowing her hair into her face.

She was the most exquisite woman he had ever seen and she was his. He took her hand in his. There was a tear at the corner of her already misty eyes as he brought her hand to his lips.

Kissing her knuckles, then the inside of her wrist to the palm of her hand, sweet rapture flooded him at the thought of their future. There was nothing he wouldn't do to make this woman happy. To see the light in her eyes every morning from the love he would show her every night. They would live and love like it was their last day before crossing the bifröst bridge.

Placing her left hand in his right he held her gaze, boldly saying to her and the winds, “Ainslee, love of my heart, these words I speak to you and no other. You are the lover of my heart and I yours. Accept these words now and for the rest of time.”

Her smile gave him courage. Taing a deep breath he proclaimed, “I vow you the first cut of my meat, the first sip of my wine, from this day it shall only be your name I cry out in the night and into your eyes that I smile each morning; I shall be a shield for your back as you are for mine, nor shall an intolerable word be spoken about us for our union is sacred and no stranger shall hear my grievance. Above and beyond this, I will cherish and honour you through this life and into the next.”

Emotional tears ribboned her fair complexion and he wiped them from her cheeks with the gentleness of a fae.

It was her turn and she was more than ready to give her oath to him. With a steady, booming voice she spoke on the wind.

“You cannot own me for I belong to myself, but while we both stand together I give you what is mine to give. You cannot command me for I am a free person, but I shall serve you in all the ways you require. The honeycomb will taste sweeter coming from my hand.”

It was done.
