THE MOMENT her door clicked shut, Norah launched herself onto Trevor, her mouth crushed against his.
A dizzying wave swept through her as warmth rushed to her toes, the same feeling of ease and security that came whenever Trevor touched her. She craved his touch, his unnatural heat, she needed it, thrived on it like a bloom in the early spring sun.
His hand roamed down her back in appreciation of her form, a deep growl vibrated through his chest. Norah leaned further into him, her nipples hardening to peaks against his chest. She wanted to feel every part of him against every part of her.
Trevor pulled his lips from hers, his breathe labored. “We cannot do this.”
“Why not?”
“You have been through an ordeal tonight.”
She tipped up on her toes to press another kiss to his lips. “And yet I am unscathed.”
He shook his head and took a step back. “No, Norah.”
Irrational rage shot through her. She set her hands on his chest and pushed him away. “Men take their pleasures when and where they want, and they are not judged. Are you to judge me for having the same desires?”
“I take pleasure in your desires,” he practically growled. “But not like this.”
As she moved to step past Trevor, he grabbed her arm.
Something broke in Norah, a damn of emotions. Anguish rushed through her, blinding and agonizing.
She turned on him, hitting him on his chest with the palm of her hand, ignoring the sting in her skin. She hit him again, and again, her slaps against his broad chest turned to punches against his abdomen. He bore the brunt of her attack, blocking sufficiently when she might injure him. He didn’t say a word, or react in any way, except to protect himself from actual harm. Again and again, she hit him, hot tears streamed down her face. Two years of pain and frustration, pent up behind a wall, broke through. She’d managed this long with boxing and scheming, but that only eased her anger. It did nothing for her pain.
Suddenly, she gasped, her breath ragged as she sobbed, the hurt and pain flowing out of her.
Trevor did not move away, accepting her pain and anger as the release of emotions overwhelmed her. He stood stoic and still, a solid unmovable force before her. Someone she had come to rely on for strength.
For so long she’d done this alone, borne the pain of what Swanley had done to her, the betrayal of Laura immediately after, and the silent shame she was barely even willing to name.
And there it was. Despite all her bravado, and insisting it wasn’t her fault, she was still ashamed of what had happened.
Her anger gave way to grief and she slumped against him, the rush of emotions pulling every ounce of energy as it swept through her. His arms wrapped around her and held tightly as she sobbed against the green of his regimentals.
“I hate him,” she said between gasping sobs, shaking with the emotions she’d tried to bury for so long.
