The twenty albums in Kato’s extensive collection are centered mostly on male friends and travel. Throughout the albums, Kato serves as a folksy tour guide, adopting the jocular rhetoric and presentation of a slide show narrator. Kato’s earliest album begins with his segregation in Kalihi Hospital, where he was detained as a leprosy suspect in 1936. Homosocial bonding is figured in this album through an image of Kato draping his arm around a younger Hawaiian boy. Kato captioned this photograph “Pete and Me, 1936” (figure 61). As the albums continue through the 1990s, they are populated with bachelors, patients, and non-patients alike who pursue homosocial hobbies like sports and fishing.
