The conductor walked down the aisle. “Next stop is Cheyenne, folks. Less than five minutes.”
About thirty minutes earlier, Dale flexed, hoping to ease an ache in his left shoulder. But he didn’t want to move much because Liana’s head rested there as she napped. Watching her during the trip taught him a lot about her personality. She liked to stay busy and really enjoyed talking with people.
At one of the stops, a woman from the local town boarded then moved through the cars, selling sandwiches, cookies, and apples.
Liana pounced on her like she’d found her best friend. She even carried the basket as the woman sold her items. Once the train rolled again, she related the details she’d gained from a conversation that lasted less than ten minutes. The amount of information she learned in the short amount of time impressed him.
“Liana.” Not wanting to startle her, he kept his voice low. When nothing changed, he stretched his right hand to jostle her shoulder. “Train’s about to arrive.”
“Mmm.” Eyes still closed, she nestled deeper.
He brushed his lips across her forehead, catching her jasmine scent.
“What?” A hand flailed the air between them, and she struggled upright. “Why?” Blinking, she glanced around.
“We’re almost there.” He stood and stretched, massaging feeling back into his deadened arm muscles. A little discomfort on his part was worth giving her an hour’s respite.
Rubbing hands along her arms, she shivered. “The air is cold.”
“Cheyenne’s higher in elevation. Here’s your cloak and your hat.”
She reached up her hands then frowned. “You removed it?”
“The brim dug into my arm.”
The clacking of the metal wheels quieted, and the train slowed.
Dale braced a hand on the metal rack to compensate for the change in motion.
Liana stroked a hand over her hair then settled the hat atop her head and inserted the long hat pin. “How do I look?”
Her cheeks flushed pink, and her eyes still looked sleepy. He wished now he’d kissed her full lips to rouse her from sleep. Where had that thought come from? Their relationship was teacher and pupil. “Fine. Nobody ever looks as good at the end of a trip as when starting out.”
Shaking her head, she crinkled her nose. “You have provided confirmation regarding one of the questions I intended to ask during this trip.”
Brakes screeched and hissed, and the train stopped with a jerk.
“Finally, silence.” Liana stood and tossed the cloak around her shoulders.
Dale collected his hat. “Yeah, what’s that?”
“I might tell you later. Remember, you did not wish to talk on the train.” Stiff-backed, she walked to the forward exit door and waited.
Infernal woman. He’d never figure out what she was thinking. Once on the platform, he escorted her to the shade of the porch overhang so he could collect their belongings. When he returned, he set them on the wooden planks. “The baggage clerk recommended either The Regent Hotel or Baldwin’s Hotel.”
“My choice is always the most prestigious-sounding name.” She eyed the valises and sighed.
Dale made the decision for her and grabbed one carpetbag and one valise.
