Chapter 9

Clarissa took a bite of the soft, flaky pastry and couldn’t help but close her eyes as she savored the buttery richness. She’d heard of croissants, but had never had the luxury of tasting one. There were more on the serving tray and she considered putting another on her plate. She heard her mother’s disapproving voice in her head saying “a lady never has a second helping”. Noah turned the page of the newspaper he was reading and took a sip of his tea, oblivious to the battle of will going on across the table from him.

“Noah, you must try this,” she finally said, lifting a croissant off the serving tray and holding it out to him. If he ate one, there would be one less on the plate. He glanced up from the paper and gave her a warm smile that caused a strange fluttering in her stomach. He took a bite of the pastry and returned his attention to the newspaper.

He had made arrangements for tea and breakfast service to be delivered to their room while allowing her time to dress for the day and it occurred to her how conscientious he was, especially given their situation. She slept much better than she had the night before and was excited about what new adventures the day would bring.

She watched Noah slowly chew his pastry and peruse the paper and thought again about how handsome he was. The silence between them was comfortable. Clarissa wondered if this was how a real married couple might have breakfast together. If it was, it somehow didn’t seem as awful as she had once imagined.

This is not a real marriage, this is not a real marriage. Maybe if she repeated it over and over in her mind, she would stop thinking such foolish thoughts. She needed to concentrate on why she was there. She glanced at the plate of pastries again, it was as if they were mocking her. Clarissa tossed her head, snatched another croissant off the plate and grinned triumphantly. She happily nibbled on her croissant and mulled over the case. There had to be some way she could reach Mabel. She stared at the croissant in her hand. The French pastry was the most delicious thing she’d ever tasted. French...France...

“I’ve got it!” Clarissa slapped her hands on the table and excitement flowed through her body. Noah nearly dropped the newspaper and gazed at her with raised brows.

“What have you got?”

“I know how we can get to Mabel,” she beamed. Her plan was unconventional, but her keen sense of intuition told her it would work...if Noah would only give her a chance. He folded the newspaper in half and placed it on the table; then popped the rest of the croissant in his mouth and leaned back in the chair.

“Tell me,” he crossed his ankle over his knee and folded his hands on top, a flicker of interest in his eyes.

Clarissa felt a lightness in her chest and her smile grew.
