In the morning, Logan woke to an empty bunk area. Ever since Lucas left on his mission two days before with his female trainee, Logan had been alone. He’d never minded much before. He was often too busy reading or studying to care much who came and who went, but for some reason, he’d not been much inclined toward his usual studies. And when Lucas had volunteered to train the female agent, Logan had been relieved. It was strange. All this time, he’d watched other men get chosen to be training agents to their new partners, and Logan had felt a twinge of jealousy. A part of him desired to be wed to an agent-in-training—even if it was for a short time. He doubted he’d be married any other way. And so far, all of the agents Logan had heard about had decided to remain wed. That would have been too much for Logan to even wish for.
A wife.
A real and true wife. A woman to love and protect and care for. A woman who would love him in return, no matter how mangled his face was.
But it had been little more than a dream. After a year of watching agents come and agents go, Logan hadn’t been chosen to train anyone. And when he’d come close to getting chosen for this last mission, he’d suddenly hoped he wouldn’t be picked. Where did that feeling come from?
Those striking blue eyes that haunted his dreams came to the forefront of his mind again. Adelaide. His stomach twisted and his heart squeezed in his chest. If he didn’t know any better, he’d feel that he was in love. But he knew better. It was the springtime fever that most young men got as boys. But he wasn’t young anymore. And it wasn’t spring. He let out a sigh and sat up from his bunk. Then he immediately turned around and made his bed. His mother had taught him from the beginning that the sooner he got things like chores over with, the better. Procrastination never helped.
Once finished, he dressed, washed his face and then headed toward the kitchen with his stomach grumbling. He met with Pearl and gave her as pleasant a greeting as he could muster, “Morning, Pearl.”
She looked up at him and smiled wide. “Morning, Logan. I didn’t do any baking this morning since there’s not many of us here in the agency right now, but I’ve got some eggs and bacon I can fix up for you and I can toast some of yesterday’s bread if that’s all right.”
He stretched as he sat down at the table. “More than all right, Pearl. Everything you make is delicious.”
A bit of color tinged her cheeks and then she set about working at the stove after handing him a mug of coffee. He held the mug in both hands letting the warmth seep in. Even though it was only September, the mornings had a bit of chilliness to them since no one was interested in getting fires started in the wood stoves.
