Chapter 15

It was almost 10 o’clock when I finished my second pint of Heineken. A group of men in orange shirts had gathered to watch a soccer match. With the television suspended from the ceiling, they stood in a huddled mass with their heads tilted back, as if praying to some divinity. I watched the last few minutes of the game, which, in all it’s glory, ended in a scoreless tie. With the men hailing it as one of the best games ever, I grabbed another beer and stared out the window at the women across the canal.

Going into the evening, I already had serious doubts whether Emma would be willing to help. The events of the night had only made things worse. Once again, she had brought me close, only to push me away. I began thinking this was how she treated all her men. I was just one of them.

When you are young and naive, like I was, you think love, purpose, destiny, and other such things matter to everyone. You get older, and realize for many, the only thing that matters is money, their only value system being whether they are putting money in their pocket, or not. While I was lost deconstructing the philosophical and metaphysical meaning of our relationship, Emma was lost thinking how many guys she needed to fuck to make the next thousand guilders. The dichotomy was stark, depressing, and increasingly self-apparent. She existed in a different realm. In her world, money was all that mattered. There was little room for anything else. Emma was intrigued by me, nothing more. All those thoughts and more spiraled through my head as I sipped my beer, alone.

That said, in my heart, I knew our connection was real. I knew it transcended the district, and I had seen shades of her generosity. A few minutes earlier, she paid for dinner, and then stopped to make sure the boy was OK. She didn’t need to do that. It wasn’t behavior I expected. She had proven herself wrong. Despite her protestations, money wasn’t the only thing that mattered. There was more to Emma than she was willing to admit. She wasn’t completely turned. Not yet. There was still a part of her left. Looking back, maybe that’s what threatened her the most. I saw something in her she wanted to forget, or let go of. In any event, I knew I had to be patient, but it was difficult. My time was running out. The millennium was upon us.

As I got up to leave the bar, I once again had the feeling of being watched. A few seconds passed, and it didn’t go away. I looked around. Sure enough, I saw a familiar face. It wasn’t a good one. It was the mystery man I’d seen twice before—first at Lunch Room 52, then at Stone’s Café. Now, he was here. As before, he wore an overcoat and open-toe sandals, and was as unnerving as ever. Who the hell was this guy? Was I being followed? Amsterdam is small, and things do happen in threes.
