The intense darkness immediately swallowed up the dog from sight. Fletcher kept on the path while praying Molly hadnât veered off in a different direction.
He held firmly onto Leoraâs hand as they continued to run through the pitch-black woods. They couldnât stop even though his ankle throbbed painfully. No matter what, they had to stay one step ahead of those men.
His mind raced over the details he knew. Above all else, he didnât understand why Ethan hadnât gone out of the woods and called for help. Ethan knew this country like the back of his hand. Heâd know going deeper into the woods wasnât the fastest way to achieve the goal.
âI think itâs safe to slow down.â
Leora didnât respond, and he looked over at her. She appeared to be struggling to breathe normally. Fletcher was really worried about her. He put his arm around her shoulders to steady her. âI wish we could afford to stop.â
She shook her head. âIâll be oke. I just need to catch my breath.â
By now, theyâd have found their friend. This was only a moment of reprieve. Theyâd keep coming.
Where was the logging company? They should have reached it by now.
Fragments of what Fletcher knew for certain and what he and Leora had gone through repeated in his head. The exhaustion went far beyond physical. His brain couldnât process things properly, and he desperately needed to make sense of what was happening. One thing in particular troubled him. How had Ethan and Tanner gotten separated in the first place? He shared his concerns with Leora.
Leora dragged in several deep breaths before responding. âIf they were both together at Samâs and managed to escape, then something had to happen after they left the house.â Her voice was little more than a whisper. She needed to conserve her strength.
Fletcher returned to his troubled thoughts. There were far greater things to be worried about. Jadeâs people would actively be searching for whatever they believed Tanner had taken. Theyâd have people in Colorado, as well. It was only a matter of time before they found it on their own, and when they did, Tannerâs life would be worthless. And so would theirs and Ethanâs.
âLook, the woods are thinning.â Leora nodded up ahead.
When he spotted the clearing up ahead, his relief was great. âWeâre close to the logging company. Look, thereâs the road.â
At least walking it would be easier than tromping through underbrush. Unfortunately, it would make them more visible.
âWhereâs Molly?â Leora looked around for the dog.
âSheâs probably reached the business by now. If she finds Ethan, sheâll come back to alert us.â The dog constantly impressed Fletcher by her skills. He thought about the pups in training. They had plenty of food to last them for a few days, and their water would last as long, but theyâd grow restless without their usual training routine.
The woods had been cleared away. Lights illuminated the business grounds. An uneasy feeling had Fletcher glancing nervously around. It felt as if they had a spotlight on them compared to the darkness theyâd come through.
