âThatâ¦â Gracie dragged a deep breath in. Moving her baking pans and dishes to the sink, her hands trembled. âThat is scary. I think Iâd better just deal with my anger quietly. Iâm sorry, Daed, Mamm.â
Jon caught Gracieâs upper arm in his hand, holding on lightly. âNee, daughter, you should deal with it in the best way you can. If you allow it to stay inside you, itâll fester like a bad cut. I agree with Minister Summy. I just feel as though thereâs so little that I can do to protect you. And thatâs extremely frustrating for me.â
Again, Gracie licked her lips, feeling as though she needed an entire vat of water just to get moisture back in her mouth. âSh-should I be quiet about this when Iâm around my friends? Or Abe?â
Abigail looked at Jon, asking him to answer.
Jon sighed. âItâs best for you to share it only with Abe. I would imagine he feels the same frustration Iâm feeling. And as far as sharing with your friends, Iâd be careful about that. You may wind up in trouble with some of the more conservative members of our community.â
âThatâs true. Iâm glad I asked. I really need something to drink!â
âCoffee. Iâll make a pot right now. This has unsettled all of us. Besides, I need to get started with supper, Gracie. I need your help.â
Gracie quickly washed her baking items, cleaned the kitchen counter and table and, as she drank her hot coffee, helped Abigail with supper. As they worked, Gracie and Abigail talked quietly.
âMamm, have you felt the same frustration as Daed?â
Abigail sighed, boiling the pieces of chicken she planned to use for the potpie she had decided on. âMore like helpless, I think. And thatâs frightening, even though youâre almost an adult. Ever since you and your siblings were born, Iâve wanted to be there to protect you from the bad things of this world. And usually, I could. Sometimes with your daedâs help. But now⦠I know so little of the Englisch entertainment world. I donât know how to protect you from anything those two could do. And I think thatâs where everyoneâs frustration comes from.â
âMamm, do you remember that Abe and his daed went to the library and got help on the internet? They learned so much about those reality TV shows. I think we should do the same thing. Maybe this Saturday, if the roads allow us to go into town? Whatâs that saying about being armed or forearmed?â
âForewarned is forearmed. And thatâs true, ya. If we finish everything, then weâll go. Maybe your daed will go with us as well.â
Gracie nodded quickly. âYa! Because, if the roads clear for us, theyâll clear for the Wilsons, too.â
Abigail grimaced. âI really donât like thinking about them.â Thinking about the Wilsons gave Abigailâs potato-mashing additional energy.
âMamm! Be careful or youâll turn the potatoes into mush!â
Abigail set the masher down and rested both hands on the counter. Her head dipped down toward her chest and she exhaled.
