Dust Bowl. The term used to describe the effects of wind erosion on the soils of the Great Plains during the drought years of the 1930s.

Earth First! A movement founded in 1979 by Dave Foreman and other preservationists, in the belief that mainstream environmentalism had become too compromised by corporate interests, Earth First! vowed to make “no compromise in defense of Mother Earth.” The group had no official membership list, and used “monkeywrenching” techniques to protest logging, dam building, and billboarding that degraded wilderness and endangered biota. Its methods included tree-spiking, sabotaging the gas tanks of bulldozers, and the use of guerrilla theater to dramatize the loss of the wild. It also promoted biodiversity projects, lower consumption and birth rates, and the restoration of native species such as grizzly bears. It encouraged respect for wilderness, living simply on the land, and acts of civil disobedience to preserve wild nature.
