Rev. Jacob Duche opened the The First Continental Congress in prayer, September 1774.

Action of the First Congresses

The early national congresses undertook many actions that reflect their Christian character. A few of them include:

• They issued proclamations for 13 days of prayer and fasting or thanksgiving during the American Revolution.

• They authorized Chaplains to open their sessions in prayer; starting with the first Continental Congress in September 1774.

• They appointed Chaplains for Congress and authorized the army to do so as well (see Appendix 7).

• They authorized the importation of 20,000 Bibles during the Revolution, since, they said, "the use of the Bible is so universal and its importance so great."
