Isabel watched from her balcony as Simon turned the corner down the street and walked away from her building. Hopefully he didn’t have to walk too far.

What an enjoyable evening her time with him turned out to be. Inviting him over had been unplanned, a spur of the moment idea she hadn’t been too sure about. But Simon had taken to her suggestion of a cooking lesson and followed all her instructions, and they’d had the most fun.

Her phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. Isabel retrieved it from her purse and swiped at the screen, telling herself she didn’t wish it could be Simon who’d forgotten to tell her something.

It was Jacinta. After a brief hesitation, Isabel answered the phone and greeted her cousin.

“Isabel, I’m so glad I caught you. Is this a bad time? It’s not too late, is it?”

“Not too late at all. I’m glad you called. I had a friend over for dinner earlier and he just barely left. Sorry I didn’t answer last time.”

“ Hang on. You had a guy over for dinner?” Jacinta asked.

“It’s not like that,” Isabel said. “He only came for a cooking lesson.”

“Sure he did.”

Jacinta had always manged to be unassuming and curious at the same time. “It was nothing more than that, I assure you. His name is Simon Ackerley.”

“Simon Ackerley?” Jacinta repeated, a clear interest in her voice. “Is he American?”

“An American who lives in London. He was hired to work on the academy’s online platform as a temporary consultant.”

“So you see him every day.”

“Pretty much, yes. The academy is not that large of a place.”

“Simon sounds promising,” Jacinta said in a sing-song tone.

“Just because you married an American doesn’t mean all your cousins will too.”

Jacinta laughed. “Knox, do you know what Isabel just said?” She repeated Isabel’s words to her husband and laughed again.

“What’s so funny?” Isabel asked.

“I have three of my Romano cousins who have married Americans, and there’s another one who’s about to do the same.”

“I’m not a Romano,” Isabel said.

“No, but you’re my cousin.”
