Chapter 7
I Will Never Forget The Way You Taste
Elijah put his hands up to his face, and I pulled him behind me. He gripped my shirttail and hid his face in my back.
“Mother!” I yelled across the room. She clapped her hands three times, and the flashes stopped all at once.
“Step back, you’ve frightened him!” she hissed at the camera crew.
I knew she was playing it up a bit, and I’m almost certain she wanted this whole scene to happen for the papers. I could see it now: “Hawthorne Heir Found and Frightened.” She knew just how to play this up, and she would milk it until it was dry.
She placed one hand on my chest and reached around me to comfort her only grandchild.
“Elijah, I’m Grandma, but you will call me Mimi, and here’s Uncle Thorne.” Thorne walked over and shook Elijah’s hand. Elijah was still holding on to me.
“Ray,” Mother called over to him. Ray came over with a drink in hand.
“Elijah, this is Grandpa Ray.” Elijah shook his hand as well.
“William,” Mother called for Father. He came from the far west side of the room. “Elijah, this is your Grandpa William.”
Elijah didn’t take his hand. He squeezed me a little tighter. Elijah wrapped his arms around Mother and turned his back on Father. Mother patted his back and kissed him on the top of his head. Father reached for him, but I pulled Elijah around in front of me. Mother had a small smirk on her face. Elijah didn’t know it, but he had won her heart forever. Mother had set up a small press conference. The Commercial Appeal, The Sun, Next Generation Magazine, Proud Magazine, Grace Magazine, and VIP Magazine. Mother only allowed six questions, and then they were going to have to exit the premises so we could fellowship as a family. The Commercial Appeal wanted to know what school Elijah was going to attend. “He will be at my old alma mater.”
The Sun wanted to know what Elijah was interested in.
“Why don’t you ask him yourself? Son?” Mother brought him with her. Elijah looked a little more at ease now. He stepped up to the mike and cleared his throat. “I like studying about the galaxy, and I have an interest in American history.” He stepped back and took Mother’s hand.
All you could hear was the purring of the crowd. He had them eating out of the palms of his hands.
Once the reporters and journalists left, Mother still had a show in full effect. She had her closest non-friends there for dinner to introduce them all to Elijah. Mother knew the twenty people she had here would spread the word for her. She wanted this dirty little secret to become as clean as possible. No one asked about his mother and I was grateful. Mother must have simmered that pot before we arrived. At 10:15, her guests started to leave as we stood by the door, and Elijah called everyone Mr. and Mrs. Mother was beaming, and I knew she had a new partner in crime.
