CHAPTER EIGHT

MRS. COLLINS SPOKE to Colonel Fitzwilliam on the doorstep of the Parsonage. “You did not find Miss Bennet?”

“No, ma’am,” the Colonel said. He wore a long frock coat and he looked weary. His chin, usually clean shaven was now dark with stubble. “And it is too late now to continue. But in the morning, we shall resume our search and speak to all of Lady Catherine’s neighbours.”

“Do you think she was abducted?” Mrs. Collins asked.

The Colonel shook his head. “I think it more likely that she was injured somehow and that she wandered off. I have seen it on the battlefield.”

Mrs. Collins thanked him for his efforts.

He said, “Do not give up hope. We shall find your friend.”

Mrs. Collins said, “Mr. Collins told me that Mr. Darcy also left unexpectedly today.”

“Yes, that is what Lady Catherine says.”

“Do you think –” Charlotte said, then caught herself, not wanting to give word to her scandalous thought.

“That they might be together?” the Colonel finished quietly. “Perhaps. It is certainly a mystery, and hopefully one that will be solved soon.”

Mr. Collins approached the two of them. “Good night, Colonel,” he said briskly. Once the front door was closed, he turned to Mrs. Collins. “You should go to bed immediately Mrs. Collins or you will be unable to manage my breakfast.”
