Our national story
During my lifetime, Britain has transformed and for a time it felt for many of my generation that the arc was bending towards progress. Thanks to advances in science and healthcare we are living longer, healthier lives. With automation and a shift to net zero, so much of the backbreaking work in the mines, on the railways and in the forges has been replaced by service and white-collar jobs that should, in theory, offer the prospect of good wages, a contribution, and a longer, happier life. A generation of young people have been able to grasp hold of a future that was unimaginable to their grandparents and make it to university in record numbers. Women have been among the biggest beneficiaries of the expansion of education, and doors to the workplace that were previously closed have opened. The Equal Pay Act, the realisation of equal marriage, and the Race Relations Acts â the second of which was co-authored by my dad just years before I was born â allowed some of my generation, including me, to grow up with choices that were unthinkable to our parents.
But the local, national and international political systems we have built have created winners and losers: at times failing to keep pace with the new realities confronting us; at others, hijacked by a few for their own gain, leaving millions facing a very different reality than the future that should have been on offer. The pandemic brutally exposed two countries within one, each with very different experiences and choices on offer. The closer I look, the more I see that the creation of âwinnersâ and âlosersâ is a result of who decides. When a few people in a few places dominate decision making, this shuts out the light and denies the whole country the chance to succeed. As we turn to face the future, the battery of challenges we face could be met by a country that was clear about what we could achieve and had a plan to match, with the foresight to put our people at its centre.
