Chapter Twenty-One
Meant to Be
I exhale. Rocky relationship or not, that’s a mighty long time to forget you have a girlfriend—especially when you’re about to take another woman away with you.
“Wait a minute.” His eyes narrow and he tilts his head. “You think Sarah and I are still together, don’t you?”
“She answered your cell phone and called herself your girlfriend. Yesterday you referred to her your girlfriend, too, not your ex. What am I supposed to think?”
“Did I say that?”
“Yes. How long have you two been apart?”
He shrugs. “Six, maybe eight weeks.”
Aww. . . geez. . . . I shake my head and sigh heavily. “So, this is all pretty fresh in relationship terms.” I frown. “But you still saw her opening night of the play a month ago.”
“She really worked hard for that role. I wanted to see.”
I look at his hand holding mine but I try not to feel it. I pretend it’s a fake hand he’s holding, willing my hand to go numb and cold.
“No wonder you bristle when I wisecrack about her. You’re on the rebound and I made a lucky catch.”
His brows knit in a dark, angry line. “God damn it, Evadne. Will you stop with the self-pity shit?”
He lets go of my hand to rake his hair.
The venom of his outburst makes my throat constrict and Talley’s warning about his temper being on permanent simmer comes back to haunt me. The color and condition of my fingernails become of interest. It’s a good thing I can’t speak or I risk saying something I’ll regret, and right now, I want answers so I keep calm.
I study my manicure. He’s not watching at me because I don’t sense it and a sidelong glance in his direction confirms it. He’s lounging back, one arm along the back of the sofa, the other braced on the armrest, his forefinger and thumb supporting his head. Although he faces me, his eyes are averted toward the fireplace. His petulance barely disguises the burning virility underneath. If anything, it enhances it, making his features harder, sharper. Breathing normally again, I speak.
“It’s not self pity, Joshua. I’m just calling it how I see it. You obviously disagree.” I take a deep breath. “Why did you two break up?”
His gaze slowly slides in my direction, sapphire irises partly hidden by half-closed lids, but still bright even in the dimmest light. When he realizes I’ve been watching him, he shifts uncomfortably in his seat. He grabs the wine bottle and tops off our glasses.
“We were miserable. Like Brad and Angelina or Charles and Diana. We looked good together, but eventually, grew to loathe each other. Sarah wanted to keep up appearances.” Joshua’s hollow laugh complements his stony expression.
“She has plans to go to Hollywood or New York like all actors do. Then, four years ago, things started changing for the better. My studio art took off and she was getting steady acting and voiceover gigs. I was getting offers for my animation skills, enough for me to pick and choose my gigs rather than compete for them.
