Muhammad’s initially healthy relationship with the Jews and Christians would have made Alexandria an interesting place to him. So much so that around 628 he wrote to Egypt’s Alexandria-based prefect. Muhammad’s companion, Hatib ibn-Abi Balta’ah, who was thought to have Egyptian ancestry, was tasked with travelling to the city. When the good-looking, lightly bearded messenger arrived, he found the prefect – usually assumed to be Pope Cyrus of Alexandria, but more likely to have been Pope George I of Alexandria – in a splendid ocean dwelling that required Hatib to take a short boat ride. He handed the pope the letter:

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Muhammad, servant of God and his Messenger, to the Prefect, the Grand Copt. Peace be upon whoever follows the righteous path. As for what follows, I invite you to the call of Islam, submit, be safe, God will give you your reward twice. But if you turn away, then you bear the sin of the Copts. And ‘O People of the Scripture! Come to an equitable word between us and you: That we shall not worship other than God. And we shall not associate anything at all in [our worship of] Him. And we shall not take one another as lords apart from God. Yet if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we, indeed, are muslims, in willing submission to God’.6
