Chapter Eighteen

Sia

The dinner was excellent. Everything tasted as if it was made at some ten-star restaurant by a world-renowned chef. Alarik made the type of dish that most tourists came to New Orleans to get a taste of.

“Are you sure you weren’t a chef in another lifetime?” I asked, as I helped him pile the plates and utensils into the dishwasher.

He grinned. “Maybe. According to some relatives, cooking might even be in my blood. But the chef life ain’t for me. I’d hate to be cooped up in a hot kitchen all day. I have to be free. Outside. Roaming.”

I nodded. “I get it.”

“I kind of forgot about dessert. Do you have a sweet tooth?”

I grinned, blushing. “Do you want the truth?”

He chuckled. “What’s your favorite dessert?”

“Beignets. Smothered in powdered sugar.”

“Mmmm.” He rubbed his belly. “I haven’t had one of those in so long. I tried to make them once. Turned out like a dumpling or something along those lines. I might can cook, but I can’t bake pastries and cookies and cakes to save my life,” he said.

“Well, I can’t cook as well as you can. I can’t even bake. Alarik—one. Sia—zero.”

“Come with me,” he said. He walked out of the kitchen and I followed closely behind. He led me down a level, into a basement that was set up like a gym, and through some doors. We ended up on the ground level directly adjacent to where I made my escape earlier. It was dark, but the moon provided just enough light as we walked down a path aligned with solar garden lamps. We walked through a courtyard set up with a grill, some picnic tables, and a hot tub with the lid closed. I was amazed at how many extras the old home had.

“Your house is amazing. I really like it,” I commented. “It has this old country vibe to it yet everything’s so modern and up-to-date.”

“I bought it from my uncle years back. He had something else built on the north side of our property. My nieces and their stepmom live there now.”

“Is the property large?” I asked.

“We own the entire swamp and then some. A couple highways and roads, but who counts those?”

“That’s really large. When you say we…” I hated to pry, but this was my first time meeting someone like Alarik. Or maybe I had met a person like him before, but never knew it. Either way, I didn’t think it would be the same. I felt compelled to get to know him.

“We. Well, what I mean is that the deed to the entire property either goes to the eldest Deveaux male descendent or the alpha of the pack. In my case, I’m both. I own it, but it’s where my pack lives. There’s lots of families out here. Businesses too.”

He opened a wooden gate and we passed through together. “And here’s the fruit orchard.”

“Wow.” Rows of fruit trees and bushes lined the oval-shaped garden. “It’s loaded.”

“It came with the property. Someone comes in and keeps it up for me.
