Consider a complementary approach originally pioneered in finance and later successfully applied in other domains:
Use strategic calculus to determine our organization’s overall risk appetite—the total amount of risk we are willing to take in pursuit of our objectives and able to bear given our financial and organizational capacity.
Explicitly construct the desired portfolio of risks using what is known as a risk budgeting process. Given the “business we are in” and our views on competitive landscapes, economies and financial markets, determine how risk appetite should be allocated across different types of risk.
Design a set of initiatives and transactions that best position us to achieve stated objectives given our risk appetite and the desired portfolio of risks.
