Menopausal Symptoms
Chemotherapy may create a chemicallyâinduced menopause. This occurs in 10 to 50 percent of women younger than forty and in 50 to 94 percent of women over forty.
It occurs because womenâs ovaries are made up of fast-growing cells, so chemotherapy agents affect them. A womanâs period usually stops during treatment. If youâre under forty, your period will probably return, but if youâre closer to menopause it may not.
Other menopausal symptoms include hot flashes (night sweats) and vaginal dryness. Hot flashes generally lessen over time, although it may take months or even years. If youâre having night sweats, you may wish to review the following coping suggestions.
Many women report a lessening of sexual desire during treatment. This is generally temporary. After the completion of chemotherapy, give yourself several months to regain interest in sex. If thereâs no change, you may wish to speak with your doctor; one possibility is that you have low testosterone levels, as a side effect of the chemotherapy. Also, many counselors are specially trained to talk with you about sexual intimacy, and can suggest steps that lead to enhanced sexual desire. You may wish to review the following suggestions regarding enhancing physical intimacy.
