Police Shootings

In recent years, the issue of police shootings has come to the forefront of media and political attention due to several reports of unarmed blacks being victims of armed police officers. National outrage ensued from media coverage showing victims who were unarmed or already in custody when actions by police officers directly led to their deaths. For this reason, data is becoming more available on police shootings. For example, the Washington Post has a dedicated website showing data on police shootings, based on news reports, public records, internet databases, and original reporting (found at https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/national/police-shootings/). During the year 2015, this source reported 1,037 police shootings, 654 of which were fatal. The total shootings so far that year involved 993 males and 44 females. By race and ethnicity, the total shootings involved 512 white suspects, 263 blacks, 170 Hispanics, 38 categorized as “Other,” and 54 categorized as “Unknown.” By age of the victims, 19 were under 18 years of age, 342 were 18–29, 371 were 30–44, 286 were 45 and over, and 19 were “Unknown.”
