White Americans declared during Redemption and beyond that African Americans deserved nothing more than second-class status because they were so far removed from the blessings of civilization. Hughes and his fellow New Negro artists and intellectuals felt otherwise and were certain that they were perfectly situated to build a brilliant future on the foundation of a remarkable past. This conviction rings clearly in the closing lines of Hughes’s 1926 essay, “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain”: “We younger Negro artists who create now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame.…We build our temples for tomorrow, strong as we know how, and we stand on top of the mountain, free within ourselves.”
