PART TWO

TECHNICAL ASPECTS OF YOGA EXERCISE

12

Spinal Posture Exercise

Posture exercise is of two types: dynamic and static. It is not necessary to consider each type of exercise separately except for a few folded-leg postures. It is more convenient to consider each exercise from both standpoints.

Starting Positions

Certain positions are assumed when starting posture exercise. These may be called starting positions. They may be classified into two: horizontal positions and vertical positions. Still there is another type of position in which the body is inverted.

The horizontal starting positions consist of three main positions: Corpse Posture or Supine Posture, Prone Posture, and Side-Lying Posture.

In Corpse Posture the body is lying on the floor with the face upward, arms by the sides.

In Prone Posture the body lies on the floor with face downward, arms by the sides.

In Side-Lying Posture the body lies on the right or left side with the upper trunk, pelvis and legs in straight line, the top arm by the side and the lower arm as advised.

The principal vertical starting positions are Standing Posture, Kneeling Posture, Adamantine Posture, Squat Posture, and Right-Angle Posture.

In Standing Posture the individual stands with the body erect, the arms hanging by the sides, either with the feet slightly separated and parallel or with the heels together and the toes pointing slightly outward.

In Kneeling Posture the individual stands on the knees, the body erect, hands resting on the thighs.

In Adamantine Posture the individual sits on the heels with the legs bent at the knees and folded back under the thighs, the feet placed under the buttocks by the sides of the anus, with soles upward, and the palms on the knees.

In Squat Posture the squatting position is assumed.

In Right-Angle Posture the body is erect, with the legs extended in front and the arms by the sides.
