Chapter Six
Annabell trudged along the icy shoulder of the road, grateful for the warmth in her boots. Nicole had put them on a chair in front of the wood stove downstairs, and over the hours since Annabell had arrived at Nicole’s home, they’d dried and heated up, just like the blanket on Nicole’s cozy bed.
Her bed…
She shivered, not with the biting cold but at the exciting memory of their lovemaking in that bed and the sinful sensations of satiny bedsheets caressing her bare skin, the soft blankets and fluffy pillows…and Nicole lying atop her between Annabell’s spread legs.
The wind whipped up her now dry skirt and blew across her covered pussy. Pussy. She loved that word. The memory of Nicole murmuring it in the heat of passion made Annabell’s underclothes dampen and her lower belly quicken with desire.
“Pussy. Pussy.” She spoke it aloud through the chattering of her teeth. Despite the misery of hiking miles back to her parents’ home in the blowing snow as dawn approached, she couldn’t suppress the smile or the response of her body.
Go back. Go back to her.
She tucked her cloak tightly to her chest and picked up the pace, suddenly worried she might follow through with the temptation to turn around and climb back in Nicole’s toasty bed.
In her arms…
Annabell shook her head. “Nein.” Her voice rose above the whistling of the winds. “Nein. I must obey the Ordnung and Josef from this moment forward. I must.”
Besides, Nicole had made it abundantly clear that she intended it to be nothing more than “hanging out” for “a day or two.” Though it still hurt to admit it, that was all it had been to Nicole—temporary. She’d used Annabell, and Annabell had allowed her to do so.
“Shh, stop thinking about her, Anna.” She fisted her hands and watched the white condensation puff around her face. “Just stop it.”
She crested a hill and passed a yellow roadside sign depicting a black Amish buggy. She’d always used that particular sign as a marker. It meant she would need to walk approximately thirty minutes longer.
Just enough time to get her story straight and decide all the details.
What would they do when she showed back up, touting a tale of kidnapping? Or perhaps amnesia would be better? Or maybe—
Clop, clop, clop.
She snapped her head up at the sound ahead. Horse hooves stomping on the snow-packed road.
And the familiar rush of buggy wheels cutting through weather.
Her pulse skipped two beats. A sudden knot formed in her throat, choking her.
“Nein, no… It cannot be.” She narrowed her gaze and peered through the slant of falling snow. There, just now rounding the bend ahead in the road, came Josef’s buggy, powering toward her. She halted just as a doe might while crossing a buggy’s path.
Alert. She had never been more alert or scared in her life.
“Oh, God. Oh, God, please. No, no!” She gathered up her layers of clothing and her cloak and spun around, back toward Nicole. Her gaze cut left, right, over her shoulder.
