SOURCES OF COLLECTIONS FOR ACADEMIC ARCHIVES

Collections for academic archives come from a variety of sources (Figure 6.1). It is common for archives programs to both receive donations and purchase material to build their collections. A strong development program increases awareness, resources, donations, and direct funding to support building new collections in an academic archives program.

Donors and Donations

A successful development program is the key to obtaining new donors, collections, and resources for academic archives. Development is broadly defined as fundraising, building endowment accounts, and securing promises of resources for the archives program. This ongoing work is an integral part of working with the various sources of collections for academic archives. Even donated collections require resources to make them accessible and usable for patrons.
