Join a mentorship program. I feel that every aspiring newcomer should enter into an appropriate mentorship program. I found the career mentorship program of the Ottawa Community Immigrant Services Organization (OCISO) very useful. The facilitators allocate experts (mentors) to mentees, matching their areas of specialty or subject interests. The mentor’s guide and follow the progress of mentees throughout the program. Having said that, the need for an exclusive mentorship program, specifically for visible minority librarians cannot be denied. It is very good news for aspiring librarians that ViMLoC is working toward establishing an appropriate mentorship program.
