Once the patient is stabilised, a full neurological examination and secondary survey is required. An assessment of the spine is incomplete without a per‐rectum examination, looking for loss of tone, sensation, and voluntary contraction. All documentation should be made on the ASIA chart for validated scoring and to assist with monitoring.

Initial management

Once completed, intravenous steroid therapy may be considered according to the protocols of the local spinal cord injury referral centre.
