After ten hectic days in London they rode north to Joanie and Anthony’s new home.

“Your sister’s really fallen on her feet in this marriage,” said Otho, steering his mount around a large pothole. “He seems set fair to become one of the wealthiest and most influential men at court.”

“You’re right in that, Otho,” Katherine replied, glad that the barriers between them seemed to have come down a little. “Joanie can order whatever she pleases to furnish her new home, as well as new gowns and jewels aplenty. But I don’t envy her. I have enjoyed seeing my family, and it has been exciting to be in London and visit the court. But I’ve no wish to remain.”

Otho reached over and squeezed her hand. “I am so pleased to hear you say that, Katherine,” he said with a relaxed smile. “I had feared you’d wish to trade places.”

She blushed, and fumbled unnecessarily with the reins. There was another place she’d much rather be. But it was not in London as the wife of a courtier. Her dreams were of another life upon the high seas with Master Raleigh. She chose her words carefully. “A courtier’s life does seem fraught with danger. London boasts fine houses, but we’ve also seen the poverty of those who live in its crowded alleys, rife with disease that spreads like wildfire. No, husband, I’ll be glad to go home. I do so miss our boy and even that naughty Katie.” She forced herself to smile reassuringly at him. She must never admit to herself, even for a second, that she also hoped to see again that Devon man whose ship had come alongside the Trinity.
