After ten hectic days in London they rode north to Joanie and Anthonyâs new home.
âYour sisterâs really fallen on her feet in this marriage,â said Otho, steering his mount around a large pothole. âHe seems set fair to become one of the wealthiest and most influential men at court.â
âYouâre right in that, Otho,â Katherine replied, glad that the barriers between them seemed to have come down a little. âJoanie can order whatever she pleases to furnish her new home, as well as new gowns and jewels aplenty. But I donât envy her. I have enjoyed seeing my family, and it has been exciting to be in London and visit the court. But Iâve no wish to remain.â
Otho reached over and squeezed her hand. âI am so pleased to hear you say that, Katherine,â he said with a relaxed smile. âI had feared youâd wish to trade places.â
She blushed, and fumbled unnecessarily with the reins. There was another place sheâd much rather be. But it was not in London as the wife of a courtier. Her dreams were of another life upon the high seas with Master Raleigh. She chose her words carefully. âA courtierâs life does seem fraught with danger. London boasts fine houses, but weâve also seen the poverty of those who live in its crowded alleys, rife with disease that spreads like wildfire. No, husband, Iâll be glad to go home. I do so miss our boy and even that naughty Katie.â She forced herself to smile reassuringly at him. She must never admit to herself, even for a second, that she also hoped to see again that Devon man whose ship had come alongside the Trinity.
