At 11 p.m. on Monday, while printers set type for the early-morning editions, a train from Washington pulled into the Harpers Ferry station. It brought a ninety-man detail of U.S. marines, commanded by army colonel Robert E. Lee, a hero of the Mexican War. The colonel’s instinct was to attack at once. Yet, as we have learned from recent hostage situations, rescuers have a special duty. Hostages’ lives come first. Storming the darkened engine house at night, Lee knew, would kill some hostages, perhaps all. He must do everything possible to save them, but not allow the raiders to escape.
